Number Line Multiplication

Draw a number line on the chalkboard or white board ranging from 0 to 20. Tell students they can multiply by skip counting on a number line. Write the problem 4 X 3 = ? on the board. Tell students they can do this problem by starting at zero and taking four skips of three numbers each. Draw arrows above the number line to demonstrate this. Explain to students that the answer to the problem is where the final arrow lands--the number 12 in this case. Have individual students solve additional problems at the board using this method.
